Tohoku University Technology: Lymph Node Metastasis Risk Assessment Method: T13-196

It is possible to assess the risk of lymph node metastasis of cancer cells at an early stage.

The presence or absence of metastasis of cancer cells to lymph nodes significantly affects the survival rate of patients. Given the high mortality rate after metastasis, it is desirable to assess the risk of lymph node metastasis early. However, conventional methods (such as ultrasound, CT, MRI, and PET) make it difficult to identify micro-metastatic foci with a maximum short diameter of 10 mm or less, making early assessment of lymph node metastasis risk challenging. The inventors of this study found that when cancer cells metastasize to the associated lymph nodes, the pressure within the lymph nodes increases, using a lymph node swelling model in mice. By measuring the pressure within the lymph nodes, it is possible to assess the risk of lymph node metastasis early.
